「Food as Art? | nudo acá

“Food as Art? | nudo acá (Tetsuo Azuma + Takefumi Hamada)” – Ticket sales begin September 18 at 15:00 (limited to 30 seats).

A Shopping Street Becomes a Restaurant — For One Day Only

During the Maebashi Biennale, we’re hosting a one-day-only open-air dining experience by Chef Tetsuo Azuma of acá, the celebrated Spanish restaurant in Nihonbashi — winner of The Tabelog Award 2026 Gold with a rating of 4.64, and widely regarded as one of Japan’s hardest tables to book.

Chef Azuma has spent his career reinterpreting Japanese ingredients through the lens of Spanish cuisine — filtered through a distinctly Japanese sensibility — and carving out a style entirely his own.

This time, though, his stage won’t be a restaurant.

It will be Chuo-dori Shotengai itself — Maebashi’s central shopping street, transformed into a dining room.

A fire will be built right there on the street. Whole cuts of meat and fish will be grilled over the open flame. Guests will share in the heat, the sound, the smell of the fire as the food takes shape — gathering with strangers around a single, shared table.

Diners here aren’t simply guests waiting to be served. They take part in the process itself — standing around the fire, watching the meal come together — and somewhere in that shared time, people who’ve never met become collaborators in making the day happen. It’s one of humanity’s oldest forms of eating together: commensality in its most primal form.

Throughout the Maebashi Biennale, art appears across the city, reshaping how we see familiar streets. This dining event, on this one day, is one of those interventions.

An ordinary shopping street, suddenly lit by fire. The smell of cooking drifting through the air. People gathering. A single, enormous table taking shape. Just as art can change how we see a city, food can change the relationship between a city and its people.

This isn’t only a meal — it’s a one-time work made collectively, over the course of a day, by fire, food, and the people who show up. Everyone who takes part becomes part of that work.

This is a chance to do more than taste Chef Azuma’s cooking — it’s a chance to taste what it means to eat in the city itself. Through this fleeting scene at the heart of an urban street, we hope you’ll feel something essential: about eating, about connecting with others, and about what food means to a community.

About the Seats

This is a performance that only comes together because every guest takes part as a collaborator. Of the 80 total seats, 50 have already been offered in advance to those who helped shape this project from the start.

The remaining 30 seats are open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.

Whichever way you join us, we hope you’ll take part as a collaborator — gathered around the fire, sharing in the time it takes for the meal to come together.
